AUBURN _ South County Physical Therapy, Inc.’s CEO and Founder Catherine (Cathy) Hoover-Smith recently completed the Bike MS: Cape Cod Getaway 2013, held on June 29 – June 30.  This was the third time she rode in this race that supports Multiple Sclerosis research, and this year, and for the first time, she exceeded her fundraising goal.

As the largest MS ride in New England, this 150 mile race drew thousands of cyclists. It began at UMass Boston, traversed through the coastal towns of Massachusetts, and ended in Provincetown. The race was extremely close to Hoover-Smith’s heart.

“Captain of “Team Smithereens” was my husband’s first cousin Don Smith,” Hoover-Smith said. “His wife Mary was diagnosed with MS before traveling to China to bring home their two adopted sons.”

Hoover-Smith’s personal fundraising goal was $500, and she was ecstatic to have far exceeded that goal.

“We raised a total of $950 and as a team raised an amazing $10,840,” Hoover-Smith said. “It’s humbling and inspirational to see the incredible generosity of family and friends. We continue to hope for a cure to end this disease.”

Bike MS consists of over 100 cycling events across the United States. It is the largest organized charity bicycling event series in the country, and since its inception has raised more than $600 million.

Hoover-Smith is a strong advocate for social consciousness.  In addition to MS, other diseases that she raises funds for include diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

“There are many diseases that we, as a company and as individuals, continue to fight against,” she added.
