WORCESTER _ With the arrival of Spring, people are heading outside to enjoy all the warm weather activities they had put on hold through the long winter months. South County Physical Therapy, Inc. (SCPT), in conjunction with Gear Works Cyclery of Leominster, will be hosting a free “Get Ready to Bike,” seminar designed for women.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. at SCPT’s Worcester location,102 Shore Drive (across from the Greendale YMCA).

With the goal of empowering women who enjoy the sport of cycling, topics will include bike safety and maintenance, proper fitting, chain maintenance, proper tire inflation, the importance of proper bike fit, as well as how to change a tire.

“Women should feel as comfortable as their male counterparts in knowing how to properly maintain and operate their bikes,” said SCPT Physical Therapist Laura Turner.

In addition to bike maintenance, the seminar will focus on exercises to help women ride safely throughout the season.

“It’s so important to do postural exercises for proper neck and back alignment, and hamstring and iliotibial band (the muscle along the side of the leg) flexibility,” Turner said.

Included in the program will be demonstrations of stretching, use of a foam roller and some strength exercises that women can later enjoy in the comfort of their own homes to better prepare and condition their bodies for cycling.

This event is anticipated to last approximately one and a half hours, with light refreshments served.

“This seminar offers women an excellent opportunity to begin the biking season safely,” said SCPT Executive Director Eric Cardin.
