As 2013 comes to a close, snow, holidays and resolutions come to mind. Year after year the ceremonious flip of the calendar into the New Year offers us time to reflect, take stock and set goals for 2014. Fitness Centers will be full of “Resolutioners” doing treadmill workouts, spin classes, yoga and more. This year it will be different! However, by February, the regulars will get their machines back and the “Resolutioners” will slowly drop off and garner a new name… the “Excusers.”
My back! My leg! It was too cold, too dark, too many people, I didn’t know what to do! I wasn’t seeing any results! I hate the gym! Anything but that darned spin bike!
And the calendar still moves even if you don’t…
But what if it was different? What if you finally found the right mix, the right motivation, the right way to exercise? Is that even possible? Why even bother? How much is enough?
Here are some basic stats to think about when taking stock of your health and your level of exercise:
- To maintain a healthy bodyweight an individual should exercise for 30 minutes, 5 days per week.
- Can you think of something you do 30 minutes per day, per week that you could replace with exercise? How about Facebook? The average adult spends 15 hours…(HOURS!) a month on Facebook (30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week = 10 hours a month
Often people lack a basic understanding of what it takes to burn calories during the day. Calorie burn doesn’t have to happen in a gym or on a treadmill. It just isn’t going to happen being prone on the couch!
You can take a brisk walk, ride a bike outdoors, swim, bowl, dance, take a yoga class, virtually anything you can think of that gets you up and moving will help you burn calories.
Make this the year where you resolve to become healthier and it just might be your best year yet!
South County Physical Therapy Inc. wishes you and yours a safe, happy, and healthy 2014.
